Bandroom — a free music maker for everyone
Bandroom lets anyone make music in a web browser, with no experience, account or installation. A song is built from bands — one instrument per band, stacked like musicians on a stage. Click the grid to add notes; it only shows notes that fit your song’s key, so it always sounds musical.
Bandroom at a glance
- Price: free — no account, no installation, no upload. Runs in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and Opera on computers, tablets and phones, and works offline after the first visit.
- Starting points: 27 ready-made styles in 9 genre families, a blank page, or any sound you make.
- Instruments: 22 instruments and 3 drum kits, plus recording for voice, guitar, bass and keyboards.
- Song from any sound: on Bandroom’s own benchmark of 29 synthesized test performances (hums, songs, whistles, kazoo, instruments, beatbox, claps, noisy and echoey rooms) the transcription scores an F1 of 0.988 — almost every note and beat written down correctly.
- Make music together: up to 16 people in one song at once, end-to-end encrypted (AES-GCM); shared sessions are kept for 90 days after their last use.
- Export: 7 formats — MP3, WAV (16- and 24-bit), FLAC, M4A, OGG, AIFF and MIDI — the whole song, a loop, or every band as its own file.
What you can do
- Start from 27 styles in 9 families — pop, hip-hop, rock, electronic, R&B & soul, jazz & blues, Latin & world, country & folk, cinematic — and hear each one before you choose.
- Pick from 22 instruments — grand piano, electric piano, organ, string section, pizzicato, harp, acoustic, electric and distorted guitar, brass, flute, clarinet, choir, synth lead, pad and pluck, electric, synth and 808 bass, marimba, bells and timpani — and 3 drum kits (pop, 808 and jazz).

- Record your voice, electric guitar, bass or keyboard through a microphone, audio interface or USB cable, with guitar amp sounds and timing compensation.
- Play a MIDI keyboard (velocity and sustain pedal supported) or your computer keyboard.
- Add reverb — small room, studio, concert hall, cathedral or plate — and echo, then balance the mix.
- Save as MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, OGG, AIFF or MIDI, or every band as its own file.
Any sound you make becomes a song
Hum, sing, whistle or buzz a melody, play one on an instrument, or beatbox, clap or tap a beat. Bandroom writes down exactly the notes you made — real pitch and octave, sharps and flats included — and your rhythm, finds the key, and adds chords, bass and drums (or a melody, chords and bass around your beat) in the style you choose. Every part stays editable.
Make music together
Start a shared song and send the link, or let friends next to you scan the QR code. Everyone edits the same song at once from any device; you can lock the session or remove someone, and your own songs stay separate. Sessions are saved, so you can all come back later with the same link and pick up where you left off. No accounts needed.
All your songs, saved
Every song you make is saved automatically in My songs — start as many as you like, rename, duplicate or delete them, and continue shared songs from the same list. Save a song file to move one to another device.
Remix, sample and remaster
Import a song: Bandroom estimates its tempo and key so your new parts fit. Chop it into bars, change its speed, reverse it, turn a sound into a playable instrument, and polish the whole mix with the master section.
Privacy
Solo songs and recordings stay on your device. Shared sessions are end-to-end encrypted: the key lives only in the invite link (after the #, which browsers never send to a server), so the Bandroom server only relays scrambled data it can’t read, keeps a shared session only so the group can continue it, and deletes it after 90 days without use.
Browser support
Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and Opera on desktop and mobile, including private/incognito windows. In Apple Lockdown Mode Bandroom uses its own audio engine, so composing, playback and export still work (recording is unavailable there).

Frequently asked questions
How do I turn my loop into a whole song?
Press Make it a song. Bandroom grows your loop into a full song — an intro that eases in, lighter verses, bigger choruses, a bridge and an ending, with drum fills between the parts. Pick a shape (Classic song, Short & sweet, Hook first, Build & drop); the one that suits your style is suggested. Every part stays editable, and Undo brings your loop back.
Can I share a song without uploading it?
Yes. Save → Send a listen link. The song is packed into the part of the link after the # sign, which browsers never send to a server, so nothing is uploaded. Your friend opens the link and listens; if they change it they get their own copy, and your song stays as it is. Recordings are too big for a link, so save an MP3 to share those.
Do I need any music experience to use Bandroom?
No. The grid only shows notes that fit your song's key, so you can click anywhere and it will sound musical. If you are stuck, the Idea button writes a part for the selected band that fits what is already there.
Is Bandroom free? Do I need an account?
Bandroom is free and needs no account or installation. Solo songs are saved in your own browser and never uploaded. Shared (Together) sessions are end-to-end encrypted: the song, names and recordings are locked with a key that exists only in the invite link, so the Bandroom server relays them without being able to see or hear them. The website counts visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which uses no cookies and stores no personal data.
Which audio formats can I export?
MP3, WAV (16-bit and 24-bit), FLAC, AIFF, M4A (AAC) and OGG (Opus) audio, plus MIDI. You can export the whole song, a looped section, or each band as a separate file (stems). M4A and OGG depend on your browser's built-in encoders.
I don't know which notes go together — can Bandroom help?
Yes. Every row of the grid is already in key, and after you place a note Bandroom lights up every musically recommended next note — small steps and big leaps, up to an octave up or down — right where the next note starts, with the best one starred and a short reason such as smooth step, fits the chord, octave jump or leads home. Fainter color notes (a 9th, 6th, 7th or sus 4th) make a tune richer or jazzier; only notes that would clash are left out. If some ideas are above or below what you can see, a “▲ / ▼ more ideas” tag shows how many — click it to scroll to them. Click one (or press Enter) and the next suggestions follow, so a melody grows note by note. Bass bands get root and walking-bass suggestions, and in Chord mode it suggests the next chord. You can also hover over the grid, or the note and drum names on the left, to hear any note or drum before you place it. The Idea button writes a whole part for you.
What music styles can I start from?
27 ready-made starter songs in 9 families: pop (happy pop, piano ballad), hip-hop (boom bap, trap, lo-fi), rock (classic rock, indie, pop-punk, metal), electronic (dance, deep house, techno, drum & bass, synthwave), R&B & soul (slow jam, funk, disco), jazz & blues (swing, 12-bar blues, bossa nova), Latin & world (reggaeton, afrobeats, reggae), country & folk, and cinematic & chill. Press play on any style to hear it before you choose, then change anything you like.
Can I save my songs and continue later?
Yes. Every song is saved automatically in your browser under Song → My songs, where you can open, rename, duplicate or delete it. Shared (Together) sessions are saved too: open the same invite link, or Continue from My songs, and everyone picks up where they left off. The Bandroom server keeps a shared session (end-to-end encrypted) for 90 days after it was last opened. Bandroom also asks your browser to keep its storage for good, so songs aren't cleared automatically when space runs low. Clearing your browsing data or using a private window still removes them, so to keep a copy elsewhere or move a song to another device, use Save song file.
Can I record my voice or an electric guitar?
Yes. Press the red Record button and choose 'Sing or play into the mic' (or add a 'Voice & instruments' band), allow the microphone, and pick your input: built-in microphone, USB microphone, audio interface or USB guitar cable. If nothing is heard, Bandroom tells you what to check. You get a one-bar count-in, a live level meter, guitar and bass amp sounds, optional monitoring and automatic timing compensation.
Can I use a MIDI keyboard or digital piano?
Yes, in Chrome, Edge and Firefox. Plug in a USB-MIDI keyboard and play any instrument band; velocity and the sustain pedal are supported, and keyboards plugged in later are detected automatically. In Safari you can record a keyboard's audio output instead.
Can Bandroom turn my humming, whistling or beatboxing into a song?
Yes. Choose Song from any sound and hum, sing, whistle, buzz or play a tune — or beatbox, clap or tap a beat — along to a gentle click for 4 or 8 bars, or use an audio file. Bandroom writes down exactly the notes you made (their real pitch and octave, sharps and flats included; only your overall tuning is corrected) and the rhythm, finds the key and builds chords, bass and drums around a tune, or a melody, chords and bass around a beat, in a style you pick (pop, chill, epic, dance). You can then change any instrument or edit any note.
Can I hum the next part of a song I'm already making?
Yes. Select the band (piano, flute, drums…), press the red Record button and choose 'Hum or whistle the notes' — or 'Beatbox the beat' on a drum band. Pick the bar to start at, even one after the end, and hum along while your song plays (headphones help; without them choose 'Just the click'). Bandroom writes what you hummed on that band in the song's tempo and key, shows it to you first, and adds it — or replaces what was there — when you press Keep. One Undo takes it back.
Can I clap or beatbox a drum beat into my song?
Yes. Press the red Record button on any band and choose 'Beatbox the beat'. Beatbox, clap or tap along with your song from any bar, and Bandroom writes it on the drums — booms as the kick, snaps as the snare, hiss as the hi-hat — adding a Drum Kit band if your song has none. You can choose a different drum for each kind of sound (all your claps as a snare, for example) and repeat a bar or two to the end of the song before pressing Keep.
Can I make music with friends online?
Yes. Press the people button to start a shared song and send the invite link. Everyone can add bands, notes, recordings and ideas at the same time and sees each other's changes instantly. Your own solo song stays separate, and undo only reverts your own edits.
Can I remix, sample or remaster a song?
Yes. Import an audio file and Bandroom estimates its tempo and key so new bands line up and fit. Select the take to change its speed, chop it into bars, reverse it, or turn a sound into a playable instrument. The master section (warmth, brightness, punch, loudness, plus a Remaster preset) polishes the whole track.
Does Bandroom add reverb?
Yes. Choose a room (small room, studio, concert hall, cathedral or bright plate), set the overall amount, and set how much 'space' each band gets.
Which browsers are supported?
Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and Opera on desktop, tablet and phone, including private or incognito windows. In Apple Lockdown Mode, where Web Audio is switched off, Bandroom uses its own built-in audio engine so you can still compose, play and export.
